There are two types on mental health injuries in Iowa, physical injury with resulting mental component, and a direct mental claim.
The first type of mental injury starts with a physical injury, such as a knee or leg injury. Chronic pain and limited mobility can directly affect the mental health of the injured worker.
If the mental injury is permanent and affects future employability it may be compensable in addition to the physical injury.
The second type of mental injury is referred to as a mental/mental claim. As an example, an employee who witnesses a work fatality may have lasting mental symptoms such as post traumatic stress disorder. These types of injuries require a medical diagnosis and involve examination by experts, such as a phycologist or psychiatrist.
